The numbers of no-kill shelters and communities continue to increase. Shelters achieving the no-kill benchmark (a save rate of 90%) totaled 2,094, or 47.5% of all shelters nationwide. This is an increase of 3.7 percentage points from 43.8% in 2019. The number of counties achieving no-kill also rose, from 658 in 2019 to 764 in 2020.

In 2021, the national save rate was 83%, representing a 77% reduction in the number of dogs and cats killed in shelters since 2016, when Best Friends announced the goal to make the country no-kill by 2025.
